What I find interesting about this picture is that it appears that trains using the middle track had no way to access the outer tracks that head toward the upper level station and the Myrtle Avenue line, unless there were switches located somewhere else not shown in this picture. This picture seems to suggest that the middle track could only be accessed by trains that use the inner tracks, I believe that ones that connect to the Brooklyn Broadway line, our current M train. Again, unless there are other switches not shown in this photo. When I look at this picture, it reminds of the junction used by the current #2 and #5 trains, with a similar track-junction that lead to and from the Third Avenue El in the Bronx, near the 149th Street-Third Avenue station. There are some remains of the trackage and support structures, although the whole Third Avenue El in the Bronx, and its connecting tracks were removed decades ago. In this case, the tracks that the current #2 and #5 trains use is the outer tracks, while the tracks leading to the Third Avenue El were the inner set. Another difference is that the middle track splits into switches for the both the uptown and downtown direction tracks, resulting in two tracks, then those two tracks divide into four tracks for the different levels. Thus trains that use the middle track could come from either level or line. Just a thought. Mike |
