The other clue is that the signbox is missing from the side facing the camera. Look at any photo of 401, renumbered 491, parked at Jamaica Yard, and you'll see a panel in place of the signbox. I'll bet it received a replacement box from Seashore's 175 as well as a pair of side door leaves. You can tell which ones they are, too: they have no indents while the rest of the doors do. Only the R-1s didn't have those indents on the side doors. The rest of the prewar fleet did, including 1689. |
