Posted by Chris R16/R2730 on Fri Sep 10 16:10:53 2010 The worst transit crime in the history of New York first manifested itself. On this day, the MTA closed the Jamaica Ave el east of Queens Blvd. It was partially replaced by a multi-billion dollar subway 11 years later. In between, Jamaica went to hell, and has never fully recovered. Dumb, DUMB!The next day there were two fantrips which used old BMT trains. Here are a few pics: Was this allowed, or was this another City Hall Lower Level incident? This is one of my favorite pictures on nycsubway.org: Sadly, this is how I remember the el in Jamaica, ending woefully short and leading to an excruciating ride on the Q49 shuttle bus to get anywhere important: I know others look at Myrtle Ave, or 3rd Ave as being the dumbass el demolition move, but for me, this was the dumbest. And since I lived through it, it was personal. I still vividly remember watching them tearing it down while waiting for the Q44 bus to the Bronx Zoo in 1978. It was hard to explain to a 6yo that the whole thing wasn't coming down and that I wouldn't have the el running outside my house in the future. While Archer Ave has been a success, it was silly to tear this el down 11 years before it opened. Jamaica was teetering already after the blackout, this move finished it off. |
