What made things more confusing on the Nassau St Line is that between Chambers and the Nassau Cut, the tracks are considered Southern Division tracks rather than Eastern and are therefore SOUTHBOUND towards the tunnel and NORTHBOUND towards Chambers St. Although they were considered Southern Div tracks, the tower coverage at Broad St was Eastern Division and Broad St train interval sheets showed all trains coming from Chambers as northbound and all trains going to Chambers as southbound including the West End and Culver trains which were actually going in the railroad opposite direction from the Eastern Division trains with which they shared trackage. As for the naming of IND routes, although the City of NY eventually opted to call IND routes by letters, a system which eventually spread to the BMT, I have seen photos of a mock up of an R-1 subway car which shows a numbered route sign which seems to indicate that the under construction city subway routes were to have continued the BMT route numbering system possibly in anticipation of the BMT taking over the routes in the post Hylan era which wasn't so much anti BMT as it was during the Hylan administration. Since the BMT refused to operate the new subway if it were restricted to maintain the money losing 5 cent fare, the city ended up operating the subway system and since there was at that point to be no continuity between the BMT routes and the new subway routes, a new route system using the now familiar letters was developed.
