My own memories of Chambers Street go back to the early 50's. We used to visit relatives in Richmond Hill so we would transfer from the IRT Lexington Avenue Line to the BMT Jamaica Line. Chambers Street was a dark and dank place then and its only gotten worse over the years. I recall that at the north end of the northbound platform there was a long narrow white box with a red (first aid) cross on it. I imagine that there was a stretcher in there. Probably for those who fainted at the sight of the station.Larry, RedbirdR33 |
