That's not how NYC developed.Actually, a sizable bit of the city's pre-1940 growth came from building apartments and homes within walking distance of some form of mass transit. The photos of the elevated lines running through empty lands which turned into highly developed areas within a few years certainly gives credit to development spurred by transit. The city still has about a 40 percent auto ownership rate. That rate would be higher if it wasn't for the public transport system and high densities. As much as we bash NYCTA, it's presence on both the rail and bus modes of transport helps to create incentive to not own a car, or for families to simply one car in lieu of two. |
