When I lived at Fresh Pond Rd in the near by apartment house the sound of the El would bother us for a week or two then when we got accustomed to the noise we couldn't hear it at all, but when I wanted to I could tell the different sounds from the standards from the gate cars and later the Q's, got so I could even tell how many cars were in each train.
