Postwar cars had helical-cut bull and pinion gears (whose teeh are cut diagonally) that are much quieter than spur-cut gears (whose teeth are cut straight across), which the prewar cars had. The musical moaning and groaning is caused by the spur-cut teeth meshing. If you own a car with a stickshift, the reason reverse gear moans while the forward geras do not is because reverse gear has spur-cut gears while the forward speeds have helical-cut gears. |
