I know that the cheapest solution for the Montauk and Greenport branches is to remain with the current diesel service. Neither are really commuter in nature. Your arguments for catenary are persuasive, if the LIRR didn't already have such a tremendous investment in third rail. Since they do, any catenary proposal would almost certainly mean spending billions on electrifying already electrified segments of the system. That's not a smart way to spend precious little capital spending $$$. |
