And it shouldn't come to mind. The first amendment has nothing to do with this matter. Here is what the first amendment says:"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances." The first amendment only restricts CONGRESS from enacting the types of laws mentioned in the amendment. It does not apply to individual states or municipalities, or to private organizations. The first amendment does not prevent a company, for example, from adopting a regulation prohibiting its employees from saying "flibbledunk" in the office during business hours. It amazes me how often people try to lean on the first amendment as the source of their right to say anything at all, to anybody, at any time. That simply is not the case. It may very well be that the officers involved acted improperly. However, it has nothing to do with the first amendment. |
