The reporting of such "incidents" are certainly on the rise

Please, no equivocation.

Given the latest crop of babies trying to ride on the LIRR, you could surely imagine the rise in stairway related injuries, to say nothing of the delays that such portals force on entrance and egress

Sorry; it ain't the riders. There are babies everywhere; and they are not hurting themselves on the vestibule stairs of Metra, NJT, MBTA, NICTD, MARC, VRE, SEPTA, TRE or even Amtrak.

There would be such a hew and cry for high level platforms that you would never believe it

In your dreams. Reality crushes your hypotheses. LIRR got the problems, not the railroads with the low platforms.
