Around 1976 I had jury duty in Brooklyn Federal Court. I was living out in Islip and also going to Suburban Tech in Hempstead. I had always seen the very limited Union Hall service listed on the Hempstead Branch timetables so one day I decided to go out to Jamaica to catch the Hempstead train from there. Think I got off the J at Sutphin and walked. That whole stretch of rail from Jamaica to Floral Park has always interested me, including the abandoned Hillside and Bellaire stops, and Union Hall seemed to be a good example. Walking amongst the old Jamaica Avenue store buildings like Gertz down to the elevated station you could get a good feel of what was really part of the typical shopping-journey-to-Jamaica-from Long Island commuter towns experience during Jamaica's heyday when "going into Jamaica" really meant something. I had some flashbacks from my own yout when mom would take us into Jamaica and the place was swarming with shoppers and stores and movies. Although I do miss being able to see the Jamaica Avenue elevated line as the trains ease into Jamaica past the Armory building. But I'm damn glad I got there that time. I had the platform to myself, and it was a clear cold night. You could see Jamaica Station in the distance. |
