The train cars are primarily a product of the times.

The R32 was most likely considered "state-of-the-art" at that time (1964). The 1970s brought about the state of the art R44s which of course were a product of their times, with the orange and yellow bucket seats, wallpaper, faux cherry wood paneling and fuzzy carpeting.

And the R32s don't even look too bad in the system after over 40 years in service but they are aging at quite a fast rate.
