I thought some CP, CERX, and even a few UP SD9043MACs were eventually given the 256H four stroke engine. It's too bad they had to go with the 16-710G3C engine when they could have dropped the 20-710G3B from the SD80MAC and given the railroads a 5000hp SD9050MAC.However, I haven't heard of any orders for either the EMD 256H or GE's HDL engine lately. It seems the horsepower wars Trains reported on 10 years ago have faded. It is funny that you can draw a distinct line between the SD45/U36C/C636 in the late 1960s and early 1970s and the SD70/C40-8/MK5000(?) in the mid 1990s, and then between moderation of the SD40-2 and C30-7 in the mid 1970s and the SD70ACe and ES44AC/DC these days. There seems to almost be a periodic cycle of advances in motive power followed by utter conservatism on the part of the railroads. Way we're going it seems like in the late 2010s we should see the next round of motive power advances, and those should culminate by the mid 2020s. |
