In addition to the emissions problems pointed out by other folks there's something to be said for having a critical portion of our transport infrastructure powered by a domestically produced source of fuel as possible. Without the railroads the country literally doesn't move, so it should be imperative that we take steps to eliminate the possibility of foreign supply problems from interfering with the operation of the railroads. Whether this comes from electrification, biodiesel, or synthetic diesel I don't really care. Right now with crude oil fluctuating the way it does we're only hurting ourselves and placing the entire country in danger by using that precarious commodity to move our economy. Railroads are perhaps the easiest thing to wean off our addiction to oil, and as some have mentioned it may be a good idea to electrify things like Cajon Pass and its line into LA, while in other parts of the country coal-based synthetic diesel may work out. |
