As near as I've been able to find on the net, the courts have ruled that you are required to identify yourself when requested if an officer suspects that a crime has, is, or is about to occur. The courts have ruled that telling the officer your name satisfies this requirement. You are not required to show an ID of any sort. You do not have to give your address or anything else. You don't have to give any other testimony. The deputy in my case never asked me to identify myself. He asked for my identification. This seems to be a significant distintion.

A business card (along with verbal identification) would not be considered substantial proof of identity, at least in California. It would likely escalate from there, but at least you couldn't be charged with failing to identify yourself. From my understanding of recent case law, neither can I.
