Yeah, that's why I put a winky. It's some quirk of how the statistics work. Like how Raleigh and Durham are separate MSA's even though the cities border each other.

Still my point is that the LA area is very dense. It's denser at the core than anywhere in the US outside NYC and denser overall than everywhere in the US.
