The line that I managed was the longest in the city. It had elevated track at 2 terminals, at grade track at one terminal and subway at one terminal. It also had significant trackage over water with 2 bridges. A train leaving Far Rockaway ran on elevated structure then grade level , then elevated and finally subway. But upon reaching 207th st., 30 some odd miles later, it still constituted one trip.A home ball is a signal, usually at an interlocking plant, is controlled from a tower. While an automatic tells you about track occupancy ahead, a home ball will usually display 2 or 3 aspects and provides route information as well as track occupancy ahead. It has other controlling functions as well. |
