Tuscarora Almanac - December 10, 1873 - The Book of First Runs and Last Runs

The 9th Avenue El opens a new station at 30th Street and closes the one at 29th Street.
The line itself had already been extended to 34th Street the previous July.

Trackless trolley service begins in the Canadian city of Hamilton, Ontario. Eighteen T-48 coaches are ordered from the Canadian Car and Foundry Company for use on the Canon Street Line.

The New York Central Railroad discontinues all remaining passenger service on the River Division (West Shore).

Service between West Haverstraw and Albany ended in June 1958. All weekend service ended at this time as well. Ferry service to Manhattan ended on April 24, 1959.

Several trains continued to operate weekdays only between West Haverstraw and Weehawken, but after the ferries were discontinued ridership dropped to almost nothing.

The final run was made by Train No. 993 which left Weehawken at 11:44 PM.

The State of New Jersey creates the New Jersey Transit Corporation. Its subsidiary New Jersey Transit Bus Operations will take over the bus and light rail operations of Transport of New Jersey. It will also coordinate with Conrail over the commuter rail operations.

This is the last day in service for the R-14’s and R-15’s. In recent years they were assigned to the No.1 and No. 3 lines.

The Archer Avenue Subway opens for service shortly before midnight. The first train to arrive is a “J” Jamaica-Nassau St Local on the lower level. The train consisted of eight R-42’s; (N) 4587-6,4555-4,4610-1,4594-5. The first “E” Queens-8th Avenue train arrived shortly before midnight on the upper level. The first southbound “E” left just after midnight on December 11 and consisted of eight R-46’s; (N) 910-939-1029-928, 848-623-719-1104.

The last “J” from Broad Street to 121st Street had R-42’s (n) 4651-50, 4718-19, 4711-10 and 4662-63. Sub-Chat member “Bill form Maspeth” was the motorman on the first train “J” train into Jamaica Center.

This is the last day of operation of the R-30’s (actually it was R-30A’s) on the BMT Division. The last train ran as an “M” Myrtle Av-Nassau St-West End Local. The consist was:
R-30A 8380-8389
R-30A 8410-8399
R-30A 8377-8366
R-30A 8384-8367

Well known sub-chat regular “Bill from Maspeth” was the motorman on this train.

A free transfer point is opened in Brooklyn. It connects the Jay Street – Borough Hall station used by the IND 8th Avenue (A,C) and 6th Avenue (F) Lines with the BMT Montague Street Line station at Lawrence Street (N,R). Both stations have been renamed “Jay Street – Metrotech”.
