Rode Queens Blvd yesterday |

Posted by zac on Fri Aug 19 12:14:30 2022 I did a railfan ride out to the last place I'd never been on the subway, Parsons/Archer. What a dump. I had a hard time believing that those stations are some of the newest in the system. They aren't at all what I expected, although I've read that here as well. And to think that's what awaits tourists coming off the Airtrain. I've done the Airtrain to Howard Beach station and that is at least pleasant to wait at.My main point in posting though is my impression of CBTC on the line. Wow, trains run really fast. My E train back to Manhattan flew the entire length only slowing slightly at 36th St. No timers, no slow orders, the train took it at the specified speed. The ride out on an F then E was also fast and I had the obscured RFW. I could see the E train leaving Forest Hills as the F was pulling in. The trains would never get that close before even with station timers. The acceleration was better, the speed was faster, and overall a great improvement. The last time I rode QB it was a crawl the entire way. It was 2019 coming from LGA coincidentally enough, and the F only sped up when it turned off the line to 21st/Queensbridge. It felt like I'd left NY and was on a modern subway somewhere else. Once I got off the E and onto the B train, it was back to normal. On an R68 you'll get there, eventually. If this is what we have to look forward to I'm all for it. Of course, this being the MTA they'll botch it up. I see they've already kicked the can on the Lexington line, but that would be so 6th Ave can have it too. From what I saw on that the R211 option orders are going through too, so there will be plenty of cars. |
