Zac: The question that you asked has been perplexing railfans for years. I believe that ground was broken for the Chrystie Street Line several years before it actually opened. It would appear that actually planning for the services to be run did not begin until about a month or two prior to November 1967. Of course train prior to that time was confusing. Some trains carried route numbers, some route letter(s) others carried only a route name. Some routes had several different reading depending on the tyoe of car used; Brighton Express, "Q"Broadway-Brighton Express, "Q" Broadway Express. Clearly there was a lack of preparation and education for the transit personnel. Witness a ten car "D" train trying to open the doors at the 8-car Broadway-Canal Street station. |
