Re: Extra fare charged: Out to the Rockaways

When I first rode Dyre in the mid 1950s, it was still a shuttle and used the old NYW&B Platform at E180. The train consist was 2 Deck roof Hi-Vs which replaced the Manhattan Gate cars that were the original equipment. At that time the shuttle did not operate during midnight hours and fare were collected on board the trains at all times by depositing fares in a manual bus farebox mounted to a bracket on one of the stanchions which was the way fares were originally collected at night on the Myrtle when the booths were closed. After thru service was established, certain differences were made in fare collections although I’m not sure of the exact chronology. I believe that once through service was established that booths were opened from about 600AM to 1000PM or so after which a shuttle operated till about 100AM or so when service ended for the night. Since there was a heavy discharge of passengers N/B fares were not collected in that direction but they were collected S/B. The C/R used the same manual bus fare box as before, but since there were no brackets for them, they were merely placed on a seat near the C/R position and the C/R keyed passengers on through the employee door. I din’t ride Dyre that often in the evenings, but it’s possible that even with full length trains arriving from the mainline, the same procedure was followed. Later on when newer bus exact fare boxes were introduced, a few of them were assigned to the Station Dept at E180 St and when N/B trains arrived at E180 St, station agents wheeled them onto the trains and since they were floor length, they were chained to one of the stanchions and remained on the train until the morning when the station agents removed them from the S/B trains at E180.
