You had to pay two tokens to enter and one token to leave (as the first token would have been paid to enter).Since this would have resulted in a triple fare for intra-Rockaway travel, they handled it by having booths that were inline with the turnstiles with a window facing in and one facing out. In addition to selling tokens to people inside fare control if they didn't have a token to leave, people who entered could request a time-stamped ticket at no additional charge. The passenger would return the ticket on exit and then receive a token back and the clerk would unlock a turnstile (I think) to let the passenger out. The passenger was also refunded a token. |
