By all rights, the Elevated should have remained in service. At that time, the new MTA was dead set on reducing as much trackage as possible, reducing it responsibility in NYC. Less trackage to maintain, more money for suburban rail. They figured the G line, and the B54 bus was enough to replace the line without replacing it. However, the new housing stock that was planned for the area hinged on rapid transit being available for the influx of new people moving in. Since the train vanished, the new homes were never built, the area fell off quicker than greased lightening. Today, the lack of mass transit in the area didn't do much to deter new growth, as plenty of new homes have been built, with more coming. So much so, that the MTA is mapping out a new SBS, and new street railway to serve it. |
