They could have RFID in farecards very easily and not need the external devices. Montreal does. You were right in saying there is no reason a new modern system needs to exclude a very common feeling. As an aside, in Montreal you can register your farecard which provides you loss/theft protection, or leave it unregistered which makes it a bearer instrument like cash, but allows you to maintain anonymity.
