Actually, I have a photo of an R-1 mockup which shows a route number in the sign box. It seems that after Hylan when the city offered the new subway lines to the BMT it was initially intended to continue the BMT route numbering system on the new lines. When the BMT declined, the city developed its lettering system which in a rather strange twist of fate ended up being applied to the BMT. |
