"that didn't stop NJ Transit from ceasing weekend express service on the NJCL."Apples & Oranges. On the South Fork of LI. theres' only one main road in & out. In the Summertime, its packed. It takes hours to get out to the east end even with the packed trains in service. You going to put all those train folks on the road too?? The area would strangle in its own carbon monoxide. Area becomes less attractive, tourism declines, real estate values & rentals decline. on & on.. No railroad equals a potential economic hit that would be tough to live with. What they should do is double track where theres room & put in passing sidings in where theres not. Trouble is, the rail road was "dark territory" as in no signals east of Speonk. They used what the LIRR called "K" cards for permission to occupy a block. I wonder if thats still the case today. |
