The U2s (1000 series) have been officially retired from revenue service, although several are still around, mostly in the yard area around the 12th and Imperial transfer station. They might still be used during rush hours or special events.

The S70s are now in use on the Blue line (downtown SD to San Ysidro International Border station). Most of the stations have now been rebuilt to accommodate the S70 cars, three of the southernmost stations on the Blue line (Palm St, Iris Ave, Beyer Blvd) have temporary platforms which can handle the S70s. So the S70s can now be used the entirety of the trolley system.

FYI, there are two types of S70s - the 4000 series that are about the same length as the SD100s. Those are the majority of the fleet. The rest, the 3000 series (only 11 of those) are longer so they have limited use. The 3000s were test units, first used on the Green line, to test them on the system.

They also showed off the problem on the Blue line, since the original stations were built at zero-inch height above the rails (totally stepless) and the built-in ramps couldn't be lowered all the way down to the platform. Even if they could, the ramps would be at too steep an angle, in violation of ADA code. This triggered the need for funding to rebuild the stations.

I just rode the line on President's Day. I hadn't been on it in a long time.
