Electricity costs more, sure, but diesel fuel isn't 99 cents a gallon anymore either. Diesel is still far more expensive than electric, fuel for fuel. When you factor in the cost of the electric plant, they may end up being the same, but still, that's not the point.People may not care how their train is powered, however, they do care about how fast it goes, and electrics just go faster (acceleration and overall schedule, not top speed necessarily) than diesels do. Many of the diesel commuter trains just can't get out of their way, while an M-8 set or an ALP/ML set is like a rocket getting out of a station. The right solution for the Hudson is 25kV/60 overhead wire. |
