The numbers in the physics can multiply that fast.That's not really a fair statement. There easily could be engineering issues that cause the problem you describe and that I know nothing about, but you can't blame the underlying physics. A train going down a grade at 25 mph only has to convert gravitational energy into heat (in the brake shoes and the engine, hopefully) 25% faster than a train going 20 mph. It's a purely linear effect. |
