Posted by tunnelrat on Sun Sep 8 20:38:12 2013, in response to Re: Bellmouths and tunnel expansions, posted by Elkeeper on Sat Sep 7 15:56:24 2013. the narrows is narrower at the point where the tunnel was supposed to be than the PRR Hudson river tunnels.I believe that gov.smith,who had a LOT of prr stock told the contractors that if they accept the contract that they will not see a penny in state funding,the original plan called for a RR,not a subway tunnel to conn.to the lirr around 5th ave in bay ridge.it was to run across S.I. on a separate row into N.J.it was for passenger service,but the tunnels were built high enough to handle freight. |
