TECHNICALLY, Hylan put the subway tunnels up for bids, but there were no takers. Back then, I guess nobody wanted to attempt to tunnel under the Narrows. The original proposal called for 2 subway tunnels and 2 railroad tunnels, and Al Smith did not want to see the railroad ones constructed. Smith had deep Pennsy interests and the Pennsy RR did not wish to see any connection which might benefit the B&O RR, either directly or indirectly. Had the City or the BRT/BMT bought the now- SIRT back then, it might have been a different story. Just had to find the right contractors, willing to tunnel under the Narrows! |
