The character route identifiers were strictly an IND thing. On the BMT and IRT they were for towers. And even then, when you look at 1930's IND maps, and it says "signal A, CC, CC, E", that looks like those were really for the towers also. Since the IND was the only one that consistently used them on all trains, and from the very beginning of the system, the prople became familiar with them, and used them to identify the route, where the other systems, everyone ewas well familiar with the names only.Even when the letters began to be phased in on the BMT south in 1960, they did not catch on, and it was not until they were really foisted on the public with the Chrystie opening that they then became the official route designators. |
