The Automat you are referring to was the BAMM Automat on St. Marks Place, near NYU. It was started by three recent NYU grads. Unfortunately, the food was nothing like in the old H&H's. It was mostly bar food meant to appeal the the drinking crowd in the area. There was no seating and it was really a giant vending machine.The operation started out as open 24-hours, but soon switched to an inconsistent schedule. I believe a combination of being under capitalized and a disagreement among the partners led to the operation closing after little more than a year. Right now the NY Library has a great exhibit going on that features the Automat. It's at the branch next to Bryant Park and runs until February. Al Mazzone www.HornAndHardartCoffee.com |
