I looked upon them (as a conductor) as more work. Heh. The "old girls" didn't have announcements, the geese had to look out the window and pay attention to where they were. And we worked OUTSIDE on step plates between cars to operate the doors. Big advantage though, we could leap right off the steps and pound the pith out of anyone who gave us a hard time too. And we were expected to watch out for all ten cars and the folks that were in them of course, and to answer questions. Seemed like more than enough.

And sadly, after a chance to run a set of 143's before the MTA did their "acceptance" (still belonged to Kawasaki at the time) I actually kinda liked them. Aside from the controller which is poorly located. But then again, they're planning on eliminating the person "up front" too or they wouldn't have designed them that way. Be warned - first the conductor, then NOBODY ... only a question of how long that will take. The cars are coming equipped for NOBODY on board. :(
