It definitely required the acquisition of "sea legs" ... but it wasn't all that bad - if you ever get a chance to try stepping up from the storm door between two cars (not moving if that's more comfortable) you'll be able to note the U-shaped steel grab handles on the gate arms. They're designed for your kneecaps - when you step all the way up and grab both trigger handles, you'll find that your knees settle right in there standing on the plates. Like being in a mother's arms actually, and QUITE secure. Felt VERY safe once "in place" there.

And in the old days, you HAD to climb up and be out there to open the doors as SOON as the train stopped, and had to do your three car platform spotting while still there before stepping down. Meanwhile the train was doing better than 20 MPH when you did. I liked that a WHOLE lot better than sticking my head out of a porthole on the 32's. :)
