Also need to keep in mind that commuter rail cars are outdoors virtually all of the time, subjected to rain and snow and wind, and in the case of the LIRR, 300 grade crossings and the road salt that gets sucked into the wheels and motors during normal winters. Being able to operate undergroun and in some cases sleep underground keeps subway cars in better shape.
