The line was not formally abandoned. The line was sold to the City of New York in the 50's, and they chose to only use the Liberty Ave and south portion. The LIRR stopped operation in 1962, and the northern end of the line was put into "Temporary Disuse". That is the reason the line was never scavenged with rails, signals, etc removed. They all remained. It all remained because it wasn't "abandoned". That disuse turned into 50 years, and Mother Nature had other ideas for it. |
