So the operator first sees a lunar aspect, then sees a lit P which he then punches to open the pocket track or reverse route to his/her train. Is that right?

No, The normal interlocking signal will be displaying red over red. The P Signal will be lit only when the train is occupying the track circuits before the P Signal. The lunar aspect will only be displayed on the interlocking signal after the train operator punches in the desired route and the interlocking plant sets and locks the switches.

The P Signal is total separate from the normal interlocking signal. The signal is mounted on top of its own post with the punch box mounted on the side of the post. The location of the P Signal is around 20’ (6 m) before the interlocking signal and is always on the cab side of the track when facing the signal.
