I think the source of my confusion is this: I'm trying to picture the train's operator looking through his cab window at this linar aspect. But you said that this applies also to trains running in reverse. So the "normal signal" is facing the other way.

But this is the "red over red" facing the opposite direction from the normal flow of trains on that track.


Sorry for the confusion, when I used the phrase "normal interlocking signal" I was referring to any signal that protects any switch at the entrance to any interlocking regardless of direction of travel.
