Which design came first?

LIRR.

I have seen the NJT cars in the Sunnyside yard area, and on the New Haven branch for "Foot ball trains".
Could that design have served on the LIRR?

Don't think LIRR wants to maintain "long doors". They converted every last station platform of theirs from low to high to accommodate the C3.
