Since it's obvious that the alignment of Pitkin into Old South Rd was changed sometime in the period between 1924 and circa 1950, that could explain a lot behind the mystery surrounding 76 St station. I think now it might be time to look into the city archives for street construction in the area that may not necessarily be directly related to the subway construction. Since the extension of 6 Av in Manhattan south to Canal St coincided with the construction of the IND subway in the area, it could be possible that the construction of the area S/O Euclid, namely 76 St station, might have been done as a part of a larger project to straighten out Pitkin/Old South Rd as part of a single project to improve travel in the area and depending on when that was done it could mean that it was all done at the same time.
