Probably cuz there's no doubt he done the deed. There are striking similarities. They were both wanton crimes (although this crime was physically far more horrific). But in this case too the Texas guy who was just executed blamed the crime on the other guy (his friend) who was there, just as Davis has done. The biggest difference that I can is that only Davis was convicted, in the Texas they gave BOTH of the prime suspects the Death Penalty. |

Actually the point I find most interesting is how the media determines the importance of news. A man was just executed who committed one of the most horrific crimes in modern times, one that stained the conscience of millions, that even figured in a Presidential Campaign, where Bush was virtually accused of being a party to the crime (he was Governor of Texas when the crime occurred and he was also Governor when the two men were sentenced to death) and yet this fulfilling of justice was barely on the media radar. In point of fact, I wouldn't have known that this execution was set for today, if not for an article in NPR. |

Were there actually LAWS in Germany under the Nazis that actually said that you can systematically kill certain people who they didn't like? The Germans were (and are) a very methodical people. When they sent people to the Concentration and Death Camps, they actually bought third class tickets on the Bundesbahn for the deportees. So if there were laws, I wonder what they said. I am sure they had laws that, say, Jews and Gypsies could be deported, and that they be sent to the camps, but have we actually found written laws that said "and be killed"? When the Germans realized that their own end was inevitable, they tried to cover the evidence of what they had done, but thing shappened too quickly. |

What about war when one takes the offensive?I don't want to get too deep into this (he foolishly says) but by the Hague and Geneva Conventions, a lawful (or privileged) combatant in war is exempt from murder laws, so long as he adheres to the Laws of War in his actions. This is called "the combatant's privilege." If he kills outside the laws of war (as intentionally killing a civilian for no reason) he is a murderer. No one bothers to honor it any more, but all the suicide bombers and their ilk are murderers, even though I think the UN defines murderer as someone who is on the side of the Western world. |
