“Good Father Houpette” pushing EU Constitution on little kids

EU tax dollars going towards distributing a textbook called "Europe, My Home" . . . and Fr. Houpette is basically pretending that there was no rejection of the Constitution by France and the Netherlands.

As Fr. Houpette tells two kids called Lea and Thomas, "You will see that the EU is a necessity" . . . but (rightly so) there is some good opposition, with strongest critics likening this to communist brainwashing (or even Nazi brainwashing) . . .

If the EU's going that direction, that is not good news, oh no.

Isn't the whole idea of a Euroconstitution dead and buried now?

Not buried, if books like this are coming out. Someone wants that constitution in place. Remember, only two countries voted "no" last time.

There WILL be a European Constitution at some point. Because Europeans are smart and they can read the tea leaves.

The largest of the W. Euro countries are about 50 mil in population. The smaller countries, of course, considerably less. The ONLY way that Europe can compete with the "giants" is to become a giant. Sure, they'll maintain their local languages, customs, even laws (much as the American states do) but only the right-wing wackos over there want to see a return to the parochial "nationalism" of the past.

The Constitution needs serious work-- mostly involving the hot-botton issue of immigration. The European Union train has left the station and there's no going back.

I wish them well.

You don't get it. If the chief figure of the book in question is a priest, that's strongly indicative of the wishes of the right-wing in Europe to push the Constitution through. And if it's the right-wing that gains control of Europe versus the left-wing, they won't be competitive, they'll be imperialistic. Note that the Church in Rome does indeed want a state religion for the EU . . . and the right-wing doesn't want a reworking of the Constitution; they want it passed as-is.

Then the liberals have to step up to the plate to outflank the Church and other reactionary forces.

That'll be rough in the bigger countries; France with their riots, and Germany with their general misoxeny.

Well, I think I do get it. "Father Houpette" aside, there's little chance of a "state" religion in Europe. Some countries are **militantly** secular. Even strong bastions of the RC church such as Spain and Italy have seen a monumental reduction in church influence in recent years. Spain?? Gay marriage?? Who would have imagined that even 5 yrs ago? And the joke in Italy is that if you want Parliament to adopt a law, get the church to speak out *against* it.

And, recall that "Catholic" Ireland and "Catholic" Italy now have the lowest birth rate in the world. (Try convincing me that Italians have given up sex. LOL!) This, of course, is a major problem since the low birth rate necessitates immigrants (read: Muslims) to do the work.

I'm not prepared to grant that a unified Europe would be "imperialistic." But, even if so, how would their imperialism be any worse than ours??

I'll give you a hint: Germany's the de-facto leader of the EU.

Right-wing swings in the more influential countries (esp. France and Germany, as is happening) serve to strengthen the influence of the RCC. All it takes is for those two to swing hard-right, and the rest of the EU countries will be rapidly de-lefted. And a radically right-wing Germany . . . well, we all know what they're about.

Now why else do you think that EU tax money is being spent on a book like this? If the left was stronger overall in Europe, no such thing would even be allowed.

Ireland's birth rate hasn't fallen nearly as far as Italy's. In fact, its estimated TFR (Total Fertility Rate, or number of children born per woman) is 1.87, just a bit below the 2.1 said to signify replacement level. The world average is 2.6 and the United States is 2.08. Italy's TFR is 1.28, close to the bottom. Niger has the world's highest TFR at 7.55.
As for immigration to the EU, there are some non-Muslim sources that have been sending increasing numbers to EU countries, such as China, Eastern Europe and Latin America. These are not long-term measures, however, as most of the source countries themselves have seen their TFR's drop in recent years. With just a handful of exceptions, the countries with very high TFR's are in sub-Saharan Africa and are very poor.
