Middle Ground Lighthouse |

Posted by GP38/R42 Chris on Tue Apr 26 07:56:57 2011 Well, this came up in the Brentwood thread of all things, but would probably get lost so started a new thread....Posted by GP38/R42 Chris on Mon Apr 25 22:05:06 2011, in response to Re: One Dead In Brentwood Shooting, posted by Fred G on Mon Apr 25 21:44:38 2011. Haha, yeah, and we are lucky to have Fire Island for our breakwater actually.... And seriously, even though I got a slip on the South Shore this year for my boat, we still will probably trailer it to the Sound a few times to, as I also like fishing the Sound. One of my favorite spots is over by the Middle Ground Lighthouse, which is the halfway point between Long Island and Connecticut, although actually is in Connecticut. We usually get there out of Port Jefferson. Here's a photo I took of the Middle Ground Lighthouse from the boat last August: Re: One Dead In Brentwood Shooting Posted by Fred G on Mon Apr 25 22:14:46 2011, in response to Re: One Dead In Brentwood Shooting, posted by GP38/R42 Chris on Mon Apr 25 22:05:06 2011. Cool, I've heard the fishing was good there, but never have experienced it myself. I'm a stream fisherman anyway and can count the times I've gone salt water fishing on both hands. your pal, Fred Re: One Dead In Brentwood Shooting Posted by GP38/R42 Chris on Tue Apr 26 07:27:19 2011, in response to Re: One Dead In Brentwood Shooting, posted by Fred G on Mon Apr 25 22:14:46 2011. Well the fishing is good there, but the funnest part is just that this lighthouse is all by itself in the middle of the Sound, just in the middle of no where. Re: One Dead In Brentwood Shooting Posted by Fred G on Tue Apr 26 07:39:18 2011, in response to Re: One Dead In Brentwood Shooting, posted by GP38/R42 Chris on Tue Apr 26 07:27:19 2011. It lights tho right? There's got to be some haunted legend that goes with it or something. your pal, Fred Re: One Dead In Brentwood Shooting Posted by Fred G on Tue Apr 26 07:44:50 2011, in response to Re: One Dead In Brentwood Shooting, posted by Fred G on Tue Apr 26 07:39:18 2011. IT DOES LIGHT!! It actually is pretty important :) your pal, Fred Re: One Dead In Brentwood Shooting Posted by GP38/R42 Chris on Tue Apr 26 07:48:30 2011, in response to Re: One Dead In Brentwood Shooting, posted by Fred G on Tue Apr 26 07:39:18 2011. Yes, it lights. It's at a point in the sound that is about dead in the middle between Long Island and Conn, well probably 60/40 closer to Connecticut, but I guess it's a point where the water becomes shallower, and the depth is shallower than most of the sound, so they had to put a lighthouse there eons ago to protect big ships. It's probably only some feet short of being a small island, but it's shallow enough that protection needed to be put there (at least for big ships). But it's so odd to just come by a lighthouse in the middle of no where, and when you are three, you can't really see much of Long Island anymore, and you can barely see Connecticut either (well you can, but you know what I mean, it's far in all directions). This is the side that faces South, Connecticut would be way off in the distance. I guess at some point the house was manned, as most lighthouses were. I couldn't imagine just having to live here in the middle of no where in the middle of the water so far from civilization. |

Fred, yes it lights, I was there after dark a few years ago and remember the light on.As for your link, that's pretty amazing, I didn't realize it was built in the 1880's! It still looks great actually. your link said the original one was built in 1837! |

While it seems close to shore, unlike the Middle Ground Lighthouse in the middle of no where, it still is all by itself there. |

One of my favorite lighthouses still is the George Washington Bridge Lighthouse....it was my favorite children's story as a kid, I remember a book that had the lighthouse there, and "watched" as the GW Bridge was built above it. |

I just looked it up though. Very interesting.... Being a south shore boy I've been to the Fire Island Lighthouse several times (of course the nude beach right at the front door has nothing to do with that). The view is amazing. Not very long ago we visited the Stonington Lighthouse. Now there is a historic piece. |

One of my favorite lighthouses also is the Cedar Point Lighthouse on Long Island. You can only get to it if you are off roading. I went there a few times with the jeep, this isn't my photo, as I don't have my photos of the house handy: |
