Haha, yeah, and we are lucky to have Fire Island for our breakwater actually.... And seriously, even though I got a slip on the South Shore this year for my boat, we still will probably trailer it to the Sound a few times to, as I also like fishing the Sound. One of my favorite spots is over by the Middle Ground Lighthouse, which is the halfway point between Long Island and Connecticut, although actually is in Connecticut. We usually get there out of Port Jefferson. Cool, I've heard the fishing was good there, but never have experienced it myself. Well the fishing is good there, but the funnest part is just that this lighthouse is all by itself in the middle of the Sound, just in the middle of no where. Yes, it lights. It's at a point in the sound that is about dead in the middle between Long Island and Conn, well probably 60/40 closer to Connecticut, but I guess it's a point where the water becomes shallower, and the depth is shallower than most of the sound, so they had to put a lighthouse there eons ago to protect big ships. It's probably only some feet short of being a small island, but it's shallow enough that protection needed to be put there (at least for big ships). But it's so odd to just come by a lighthouse in the middle of no where, and when you are three, you can't really see much of Long Island anymore, and you can barely see Connecticut either (well you can, but you know what I mean, it's far in all directions). This is the side that faces South, Connecticut would be way off in the distance. I guess at some point the house was manned, as most lighthouses were. I couldn't imagine just having to live here in the middle of no where in the middle of the water so far from civilization. |
