I used to have a Mustang back in the 90's and my cousin once drove it somewhere around 115 mph on the 15 fwy on the way to Vegas. The fastest that I ever drove it was 100 mph on the 405 fwy in Long Beach. It was the first day of the LA riots and the freeways were empty. The fastest that I drive now is maybe 80 and that's very rarely. Typically I max out at 70-75. |

I dunno, probably 130 as I buried the speedometer in that Bonneville. I dunno. I'd been up to 120-125 several times.I drove 120 or so in a 83 Honda Accord on I-70 in CO, slowed down, got off the exit and proceeded to blow out a tire at 30 mph. I never drove fast like that again after this, figuring it was a sign. your pal, Fred |

Yeah, everyone really should check their tire rating before driving that fast. Not necessarily for the blowouts, but my understanding is that will indicate the tire's ability to maintain traction. |

I had the speedometer needle pegged on my old 91 Civic on the NJTP/PATPK connector road. That makes it at least 120mph, but I found that the speedometer ran slow the higher it got on that car, so I'd guess it was somewhere between 130 and 140.Unfortunately about 15 to 20 minutes after achieving those speeds the New Jersey State Police were only so happy to provide me with official documentation that my car was travelling at 91mph past the garrison just north of Exit 4. The fine and points from that bit of stupidity effectively ended my excursions beyond 80mph the highway system. Then when I bought my '08 Civic I wanted to see what the digital speedometer looked like displaying triple digits. I really was interested, but wasn't sure I wanted to spend the money or even face the prospect of losing my license. It took me a few months to work up the nerve to really push it and go for 100mph. That is of course, until I remembered there was the "MPH \ km/h" display button and that I could easily see what 100 looked like on the display while still traveling at NJSP friendly speeds. |

Back in 1971, I was tooling along cross-country on the way to California in my first car, a brand new Plymouth Scamp (yellow with a black top). Well, just moving along on I-80 somewhere in Iowa, not really paying much attention, look down at the speedo, and whoa, I was over 100 without even realizing it. Nice smooth engine that was.Slowed down immediately to a less obviously illegal 80 the rest of the way. |

Good thing you didn't have to turn.I neglected to mention that in 1987, my brother and I went 130 mph on that same Ocean Parkway in a 1986 BMW 535i. Man, that was a fast M-F'ing car. It was as solid as a bank vault all the way up to 130 and it was still accelerating when we chickened out. I personally have never owned a fast car. The most powerful car I ever owned is the one I own now, a 2008 Toyota Highlander Sport 4WD with 270 hp. My first car was a '75 Pontiac Grand Prix with the 400 cid V-8 but it was on its last legs by the time I inherited it from my older brother and it didn't have much power left. |

And while the "55mph" speed limit is completely and unrealistic for roads like the Long Island Expressway, Sunrise Highway in Suffolk, Rout 135, and the like, the minimum speed of 40 is also way too slow. It should be raised to 65 and 50 respectively. |
