The remarkable thing is that after the underwear fail, the new place is up the terrorist's ass. Those backscatter machines will NOT detect anything inside the body ... dumbasses. :( |

No shit. :)Engineers can easily calculate how deep 20 MICROWATTS of Xray will go. If they actually make it to the T shirt to bounce, I'd be amazed. meanwhile, everybody's going apeshit that the frequency of the emitter is up there towards Xrays, but it's nothing more than a shitty little 1/4 cellphone power microwave toy. Add a pinch of high school science fair security theater, and you've got a road show. :-\ |

I guess after this trip I am taking on Tuesday, I won't be flying again. There is no way in hell that I'll go through the back-scatter machines and I don't really like the idea of being groped by TSA agents. |

The backscatter stuff genuinely isn't risky on a technical basis ... now on a "you don't wanna see my junk" basis, that may be different. But there's no radiation risk at the extremely low power that those things emit ... |

I was okay with taking off my shoes, I was okay with taking my laptop out of my bag, I was okay with emptying my pockets of everything metallic. At some point, a line needs to be drawn. These new machines are the line for me. I used to enjoy flying, now I find it a major pain in the ass and the idea of being groped every time I take a flight (because I will not go through these machines) just kills the idea of flying for me. If I can't take a car, boat, bus, or train to get where I am going, I guess I won't be going anywhere. |

Pretty much my own attitude there ... but the hysteria over the so-called radiation is incorrect ... I have no problem with people literally taking their "liberties" seriously. That's what we're SUPPOSED to do. Damned shame no one stood up for them when they were taken away the FIRST time. :(But yeah, if I need to go somewhere outside the US, Montreal is a good place to get there for me. After all, trains, buses and cars have a difficult time in the Marianas trench. :) |

Posted by WillD on Wed Nov 17 02:40:55 2010, in response to My take on the TSA machines, posted by PHXTUSbusfan on Tue Nov 16 23:00:23 2010. Eh, I went through one at O'hare a few weeks back. I just got in the shortest line and was slow to realize the line was so short because I'd gotten in the full body scanner lane. Once I'd gotten my shoes off I was kinda committed and didn't feel like getting the TSA patdown if I'd fled the line.I really don't see what the big deal is. If someone is that desperate to see naked bodies, especially with the internet, then I'm more depressed by that person than I am enraged that they'd use mine or a significant other's images for their enjoyment. IMHO the biggest problem with the full body scanners is how slow they are. They take at least five times longer than the old metal detectors to complete a scan. They're going to need dozens of the machines to replace current screening checkpoints with 6 to 10 metal detectors. Just about the only other issue I had with it was the woman passing through the machine in front of me. I do not know what country she was traveling to, but she was rather large and did not consider bathing much of a priority. I swear I saw the TSA employee guiding people through the scanner turn his head slightly in disgust when she raised her hands above her head. |

I get more exposure from my cellphone. When I was standing in the thing I thought I felt a tingling sensation, but I'm pretty sure that was psychosomatic, probably caused by everyone walking through the terminal gawking at the new scanner and the poor bastard standing in it. |

If you don't wanna do it, don't fly. If/when enough people stop flying because of this, the airlines will pressure their congressmen/women to put a stop to it. |

It's not the TSA workers who are in a rush to get on the plane. It would be the passengers who would never opt for that choice again after missing their flight. |
