Mechanically Separated Chicken

This Snopes article is the best reinforcement of my desire NOT to know how certain foods reach my plate. The frightening part is, the truth is wilder than the myth! Watching the video of how they recover ALL the usable meat from a chicken made me go YIPE YIPE YIPE...I'll never go near a KFC again!

after seeing the halal meat they get shoved in england, I don't want to click the link.
I saw one of these shows about the slaughterhouses on Drexel Univ TV back in the day when they were all on cable.

There is a HUGE poultry slaughterhouse not too far from me in Queens Village, and I'm glad to be ignorant of what goes on in there. But a little information about how your food is made is...bad for the industry, because you'll never eat that food again.

Churchill had it exactly right when he said "those who are fond of legislation or sausage, should not see how either is made"...

Funny quote.

Quite a coincidence too. Lately I've decided that people are detached from their food and I don't believe it's a good thing. Just by magic it's in the supermarket. Besides the end of the world issue...blizzards hurricanes, etc.
I think people should try to grow one veggie plant somewhere. Even in a pot. Pepper, tomato, onion, whatever. Pick it out of the ground and put it in something. It gives you a new appreciation. Or just weridos like me.

This is nothing shocking or new. This is how the industry makes use of meat which is normally wasted. How do you think SPAM was invented? It was made from pork shoulder scraps which normally sold for next to nothing as dog food.

Using scraps and ordinarily inedible cuts of meat to make sausage so that it would not go to waste is as old as civilization is MSC is this philosophy, melded with modern technology. What the hell do you think the early hot dogs were made from? Snout, feet, organ meat, tail, etc ....

Dunno ... the "potato chip" was invented by a pissed off chef in Saratoga, George 'Speck' Crum of Saratoga Springs ... Crum worked at Moon's Lake House on Saratoga Lake as a cook, where his sister Catherine Speck Wicks also worked.

The grumpy patron ordered Moon's Fried Potatoes, their well-known house specialty. At that time, fried potatoes (or French fried potatoes) were commonly served in thick cut slices in the French tradition. The patron found the potatoes to be too thick and soggy. Dissatisfied, he sent them back to the kitchen and requested that they be cut thinner. He was duly served a second portion, and still not satisfied he returned them yet again, insisting that they be cut thinner still. Not particularly receptive to criticism of his cooking, the spirited Mr. Crum obliged by slicing them as paper-thin as he could manage and salting them heavily in an attempt to make them inedible. Deep fried, they became quite crispy and impossible to eat with a fork. Intending to teach the wealthy patron a lesson, the reaction from the diner instead was one of enthusiastic appreciation and a request for a second serving of chips! Soon other diners requested Crum's chips, and so began the illustrious history of "Saratoga Chips", a Moon's Lake House specialty.

Another version of the story claims that Catherine Speck Wicks accidentally dropped slices of potato into hot fat she was preparing for a batch of doughnuts, and when Crum fished it out, he tasted it and decided to put it on the menu as crispy Saratoga Chips.

In 1860, Crum opened his own restaurant in Saratoga Springs on Malta Avenue near Saratoga Lake. Within a few years, he was catering to a large and wealthy clientele that included the Vanderbilts, Jay Gould and Henry Hilton. A Saratoga historian claims in an article published in the Saratoga Springs newspaper, The Saratogian, that the reputation of Saratoga Chips stayed with Moon's and Crum focused on fish and game at his restaurant. The Snack Food Association claims Crum brought his invention to his newly opened restaurant where he placed them in baskets on all the tables, and marketed them in takeout boxes as Saratoga Chips, but never patented or protected his invention. When Crum died in 1914, his obituary stated he was the originator of the Saratoga Chip. However, when his sister Catherine died in 1917, her obituary stated she was the inventor of the Saratoga Chip. This same obituary also claims she first came to Saratoga in 1861, a full eight years after the Chips were purportedly invented.

Obviously, around here, we accept no substitutes. :)

Maybe "processed" doesn't tell the entire story. If they are really "breasts" then I doubt that they are extruded like the chicken in the OP. You know the consistency of a chicken breast. Is the chicken that you mean more like a regular breast or like the old McNuggets? It's easy to tell the difference.

I think the meat is from the breast, but it has some additives.

I found the chicken breast at McDonald's to be kind of slimy. They have to do something to it. Especially to get all the sodium inside for flavor and texture.

Oh. Go back and watch the second youtube clip in the story JZBMT posted. It's awesome.
