The 1-1 in regulation was about right for the first 90' but Ghana really took control of the match in extra time. Too bad. A quarter-final berth would have been nice.An overall good effort by the US. They set a goal to advance out of group and did it by winning the group. They made it into extra time in the second round. Not bad. The future of the US defense looks bleak. Cherundolo and Bocanegra are 31 and pretty much done. Gooch seems finished. I hope some youngsters can step it up. |

The entire team is aging and for the first time in years we don't really have a young group to be excited about. It was supposed to be Altidore, Adu, and Spector, but they haven't really lived up to the hype. The best player on the US team may be Bradley and the word that I would use to describe him is serviceable. |

Donovan and Dempsey still have a few good years left in them. I also like Maurice Edu. Spector may get better. Freddy Adu is only 20. He's far from finished and is finally getting some playing time in Europe. Torres is also young. He just wasn't ready this year and future coaches may know how to better utilize him. Then you may get future late bloomers (like Gomez and Buddle were this year). We will keep producing quality players. I just don't know who they are yet. Except for on defense, I think we'll do OK. There is a young dual German/American citizen names Danny Williams who plays defense in the Bundesliga. We need to find out if there are more people out there like him. We can't afford to have the next Giuseppe Rossi or Neven Subotic get away. |

I agree that defense will continue to be a problem, but I think that it's better than ever. We're just getting exposed because we have the ability to attack more now instead of bunkering and only counter-attacking.My thinking is that we're a long way from getting better overall. My theory is that we play so well as a team because our regular players get far more caps than players in other countries and play together more frequently. For example Donovan has something like 130 caps at age 28. That would be a record number in some countries and he'll still probably get maybe 40 or 50 more. As we develop better talent that plays more regularly in top leagues they'll play together less frequently. Our strength is really based on our familiarity. Kind of like how European basketball teams can play so well against a team of NBA allstars that practice together for a few weeks. |

I missed it, but it sounds like England were put in their place. They so overrate their team and players.I so agree. When they are not playing with their clubs along international superstars they are so ordinary. Unfortunately many American fans believe the hype too because of the EPL, forgetting that top EPL teams feature very few English players. The state of American baseball is similiar. They are not even close to being a perennially elite team (Germany, Italy, Argentina, Spain, France, Brazil). Once again I agree. Based on their results throughout history (this WC not included), I separate European national teams in a top tier consisting of Italy, Germany and France and a second tier of Spain, Netherlands, Portugal and England. A third tier would have various rotating teams that sometimes have good results. England has only reached the WC semis twice in their history. They have never done shit at the Euros or the Under-20 and Under-17 World Cups. Their women's team is complete garbage. |

I was reading a few English soccer message boards after they tied Algeria and some were admitting that they overrate their players and that they don't look so great without the international players next to them as they are during the Premiership. Did you know that many in England considered Wayne Rooney to be perhaps the best player in the world before the cup?!? |

I don't know that they would start.Of the Americans, I think that Howard would make those squads with Donovan and Dempsey having a shot at them. England and the US are about even when it comes to starters though England has more depht. That 1-1 game was just about right an no fluke. England may be slightly better but not by much. We are just fucked if some key player is hurt, suspended or underperforming. |
